My new bird sleeps excessively and is always fluffed up. Is it ill?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Lovebird | Male | 0.1 lbs

I got my bird Karu a few days ago. Unlike the other two birds I own, Karu sleeps excessively. Along with sleeping a lot, my bird is fluffed up the majority of the time, even when it’s not sleeping. So, is my bird ill or am I being paranoid?

Thanks for reaching out about Karu and including a photo. Fluffed up in the situation is likely an indication of illness. First, isolate Karu from the other, just in case something transmissible to other birds. Second, provide heat support in the 80-85 F range to provide some support. Third, a veterinary visit is indicated to assist with an assessment and diagnostic/treatment plan. Good luck.
