My cat's sick for weeks, vets can't find cause. What tests to ask?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 years and 2 months old | 6 lbs

My little heart is breaking. My cat has been off for 3 weeks now. He is shaking, withdrawn, his body is tense, sneezing, breathing with mouth open, coughing, scared of everything, uncomfortable. I have taken him to 2 vets. The first treated him for possible poisoning and took all of his vitals, they were fine. The second vet also tested all his vitals and they were also fine. He is not being treated for a possible cat flu/athtitis. 10 days on medications his symptoms are the same.

I'm sorry to hear that Tobi is sick! It would be helpful to know what specific tests have been done at his vet visits, what the results were, and what medications he's currently taking in order to give any thoughts on what steps might be recommended from here. I would suggest general blood work (a CBC and chemistry panel) as well as chest x-rays as a starting point, if these things haven't been done already. It does sound like his current treatment plan isn't working, so without more information, the best advice I can give is to take him back to your veterinarian for a recheck to see what they suggest as the next step. If he/she isn't sure what else to do, then I would request referral to an internal medicine specialist for further evaluation.
