My dog has a red spot on her vulva. Home treatment or vet visit?

My dog has a small red spot on her vulva. She seems to be urinating fine. No problem eating. She licks it a little more than normal. When she was around 1-2 she had yeast infection in her ear. Is this something I can treat at home with cleaning it and topical or is it something a vet needs to treat?

I think you can try to treat it at home first. I suggest you use these medicated pads topically. If after 7-10 days there is no improvement or they are worse then your vet should take a look. You can try to use chlorhexidine containing pads (such as the Douxo chlorhexidine 3% PS pads) to clean the are twice daily for 7 days. You may find these online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. Not only the vaginal area is inflamed but it seems that the ventral abdomen is involved as well. She is probably itchy but these redness areas do not seem inflamed because of the rubbing. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Hope this answer was helpful, but please do not hesit

Hi and thanks for your request. This small skin lesion seems to be related to a superficial skin abrasion, which could be traumatic, infective or due to self-traumatism (licking). I would recommend to: - stop any further licking (if any) by using a buster collar. - disinfect the area with some hibiscrub diluted 1:10 with water twice daily for 5-7 days. Lack of improvement by then should be ideally checked by your local veterinarian.

Which could be a spot of inflammation which could possibly be due to an infection in the area. In case some discharge is present, a deeper and more serious infection could be there as well. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. This actually does not look very bad. I think you can either just leave it alone and let it heal by itself (no more peroxide and also no more washing please), or if you feel the need to put something on the reddened area, you can put some OTC antibiotic ointment on it. Should the area get redder , then stop the ointment.

My rescue pitbull has bumps on her peepee area. Cant tell if they are hurting her or not. She licks it a lot. Shes between 3 and 5 years old the shelter said. She has had puppies but is fixed now. That's all I know about her.
