My outdoor cat has a deep wound and ticks. Does she need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | 3 years old | 8 lbs

My cat is an outdoor cat. She'll be gone for weeks, and we see very little of her. When she does show up, enough time has usually gone for her fur to be all matted (really really matted) and she has ticks all over her neck and head. My sister accidentally cut a HUGE piece of her skin off! All I did was put some bandage around her to try to keep her from licking herself. I'm underage and my dad doesn't want to take her to the vet. I don't know what to do, I'm really worried.

This wound needs immediate attention from a vet as it is fairly large. If it is treated quickly before infection sets in it may simply be a case of a few skin staples. If the wound is older the cat will likely need an anaesthetic to fix the wound properly and antibiotics. Your dad has a responsibility as a pet owner to get her appropriate treatment. You should also think about preventative treatment for ticks.
