Parvo puppy potty training: Can she go outside or only inside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 24 days old | 12 lbs

My puppy is being treated for parvo. I’m not sure what to do when she has to pee or poop. She’s really crying to go outside but I’m not sure how to get her to stop and just go inside on the pads or if I should take a pad out and just grab as she starts?

If you can't get her to go inside, you can take her outside and use a pad under her. Try to use an area with a hard surface as opposed to grass or soil in case she misses the pad. A hard surface is easier to decontaminate than grass or soil. After she is done, you can sanitize the surface using a diluted bleach solution. If she will go inside, use the pads and dispose of them accordingly afterwards.

Hi there. Unless you have a specific reason to think that your yard is extremely high-risk for parvo, there should be no reason that your puppy can't be potty trained outside. This is what the vast majority of puppy owners do, with no problems :) The vaccine for parvo is extremely effective - so as long as she stays current on her booster vaccines for the full series, it's very unlikely that she would contract the disease even if she were exposed. I do not typically recommend pee pad training unless you plan to continue this for the dog's entire life, as it's very confusing for them when you later "change the rules" and try to get them to potty outside instead. Much better to teach them to go outside from the start!
