My dog's skin is super itchy, and home remedies aren't working. What next?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 8 lbs

All of the sudden Zoey's skin seems to be itchy. I've checked her for fleas, bathed her with soothing shampoo, and used an anti itch spray on her. Nothing seems to work. So you have recommendations?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zoey. If your at home treatments have not helped, then it is time for her to see her veterinarian. Her skin will be assessed and tests may be performed to ensure that she does not have mites or ringworm. If not, then allergies are common this time of year. Based on her skin, she may need antibiotics if there is a secondary infection. There are potent anti-itch medications that will improve her comfort dramatically as well.     Poor Zoey. It may be that she has some allergies causing her scratching. Wiping down her belly and legs after she goes outside may help by removing any dust of pollen. Using a medication shampoo such as Duoxo Calm can help decrease the itching. Most often excessive skin itchiness is due to allergies or mange. The allergy could be caused by anything Zoey is in frequent contact with (plants, pollen, chemicals at home and outside, carpets, dust, food she eats and more). Please, take her back to your vets for another check. She will most likely benefit from medications to reduce the itchiness that your vet will prescribe. Your vet may want to examine skin scrapes under the microscope to rule out mange.

My dog has itchy skin and we’ve tried pretty much everything (went to veggie kibble, Apoquel, Cytopoint, did skin cytology which came back negative, stopped all treats, tried Amitriptyline, tried bathing her with medicated shampoo) nothing has helped
I would try a prescription hypoallergenic diet. Your vet will be able to recommend the one they think will work best for her like science diet Z/D or purina HA. This will be your best shot to rule out any food allergies. I recommend to do a minimum of a 12 week food trial with NOTHING else except for the Z/D. Even her heartworm prevention, if you give it, needs to be hypoallergenic. Unfortunately, most of the oral ones have chicken or beef flavoring in them. For treats, you can take the canned version of whatever food you choose and put a small amount into an ice cube tray and freeze them. Then popped them out and put them in a bag in the freezer for treats. I would also consider putting her on both apoquel and cytopoint at the same time to help control itching. I would also talk to your vet about whether or not they think there is any yeast on her. Yeast can be very itching. There is a anti-fungal that can be given long term and be safe. Awww what a sweet face! A number of different things could cause what you are seeing. It may be a bacterial skin infection, a fungal infection such as ringworm or an allergic cause of some kind. Ideally, she should be seen by your veterinarian. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zoey. It is possible that allergies are to blame for her ongoing skin disease especially if her problems are somewhat seasonal. There are two great new allergy medications used to control itching and licking. They are both very effective. Typically if the itching can be controlled and medication such as an antibiotic can be used to treat any secondary infection, the skin will heal. This will take away the odor. The two medications I used most commonly for environmental allergies are Apoquel and Cytopoint. It is important to rule out other allergies such as fleas and diet. It is possible that Zuco has environmental allergies. As he is currently in discomfort, I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian, putting him on an oral prescription flea/tick preventative such as simpsrica, bravecton or nexgard to rule out flea bite allergies, inquire about a minimum of a 2 week trial of an allergy medication called Apoquel if indicated based on your vet's examination +/- a monthly allergy injection called cytopoint. Both medications have been life changing for many dogs with environmental allergies. If Apoquel +/- a topical prescription steroid/antibiotic/antifungal ointment such as dermavet does not alleviate the itching, a food trial with a prescription diet such as Royal Canin Ultamino for a minimum of 2 months may be indicated. Home remedies if you are not able to bring him to the vet immediately can include placing an e-collar to prevent biting/worsening of lesions, a moisturizing oatmeal shampoo such as Aveeno every day and a gradual transition to Purina

This is a procedure used to detect the presence of mites within the hair follicles of the dog. If this is the case, she will need a medication to control the mites. You can try a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to improve skin quality. The other option is to try a follicular flushing shampoo such as benzoyl peroxide formula. This will help if mites are the cause. However, she would still need a prescription medication. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Mocha! I like Omega 3 fish oil for skin problems. It may not take care of the entire problem but will help. I would also try a medicated shampoo and conditioner. I would consider changing Mocha's food. If she has a food allergy, chicken is the most common offender. Try a food that contains fish, venison, beef or duck. Be sure that you do not give her human food or treats that contain chicken during the food trial. You can also try antihistamines to control her itch. Probiotics, antihistamines and an omega-3 fatty acid supplement for pets may help but they may not cure the condition. When you can, have Lily re-examined by the veterinarian. I recommend to conduct a proper food trial with a prescription hydrolyzed protein diet. This is the best and only way to accurately rule out food allergies as the cause of itching. Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). I would recommend to have her checked as soon as possible.
