My husky has dry, itchy skin and keeps scratching. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Husky | Female | 7 years and 9 months old | 65 lbs

My husky has these dry spots on her that have a lot of dandruff or dry skin. She keeps trying to bite the area, scratch it, or wants us to scratch there. I don't want her to do any of that because I don't want to make it worse. She had something like this when we adopted her 5 years ago, but it was much worse (she tore hair out then and sometimes bled). Is there anything I can put on it or give her to help? Is it a reason to go to the vet? She is on flea/tick prevention.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Phoebe. I do recommend that she sees her veterinarian. Her skin appears like it might be infected. In this case, she would need antibiotics and possibly a medicated shampoo to help her heal. This time of year allergies are common. Huskies as a breed though are prone to skin disease duc to a zinc deficiency. It is worth having her seen so that the cause can be identified and proper treatment started. I hope this is helps!
