How to train my dog to stop jumping on other dogs when guests arrive?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 1 month old | 47 lbs

Whenever someone enters our house Rey gets excited and jumps on and starts to bite our other dog Finn. There are other times she will get excited and him, I worry that if I don't curb this behavior it might escalate, what can I do training wise to stop her from jumping our other dog when she's excited?

I agree that curbing this behavior is a good idea. The best thing to do would be to train Rey to go to a specific location when someone enters the house. She should be trained to sit and wait until you call her. Begin training with just her. Then introduce the other dog on a leash with a helper. This will take some time and the guidance of a professional trainer may facilitate and speed things up. There is a trainer named Victoria Stillwell who has written several books which may be helpful as well. Best of luck.
