My dog has kidney/liver problems and trouble urinating. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | 10 years and 3 months old | 20 lbs

The dog has been sick for two months. The cause is urine leakage, standing up and not urinating. It can urinate when it relaxes. We took him to a pet doctor. The doctor said there were kidney and liver problems. Here's our baby's examination report. What kind of medicine should we use?

Why a cute little guy! It may be helpful to have an abdominal ultrasound (sonogram of the belly) or X-rays done to get a better idea of what is going on; its hard to say based solely on blood work. Bladder stones, etc could be contributing to his symptoms. Was there a CBC as well? The attached report is only a chemistry profile. What was your veterinarian's recommendation? Increased fluid intake would potentially be helpful. If at any point he is unable to urinate entirely, is straining and no urine is coming out, or he stops eating and or is vomiting, please seek emergency care. I am sorry that I cannot specifically answer your question "What kind of medicine should we use?", as I just don't have enough information to safely advise you of any specific treatment plans.
