My puppy's urine smells like ammonia and has diarrhea on antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Female | spayed | 5 months and 5 days old | 25 lbs

Dear god! Mia’s urine smells like straight ammonia so much that I have to hold my breath when I’m cleaning up her puppy pads and kennel. It’s horrid!! She’s on amoxicillin for a skin infection, could this be the reason why?? She is on digestive diet under the discretion of her vet but other than that nothing has changed but I can’t take the smell without wanting to run out of my house. She is also having running stool or jelly like stool but vet thinks it’s the antibiotics..?

It could be from the antibiotic. I suggest you speak to your vet about switching to a different one. She may be "allergic" to amoxicillin. I would also suggest you start her on a probiotic to balance the good bacteria in her gut since she is on antibiotics. That should help with the diarrhea. I like Fortiflora (your vet may carry it) or you can buy it online. You can use any probiotic made for dogs (no human products) but I really think Fortiflora is the best. I suggest you give it for two weeks minimum even if the diarrhea is better in a couple days.
