They can and you definitely want to avoid them straining to defecate. It is best to feed very soft foods, bland and easy to digest as well. Also, your vet should have given you a type of laxative to make the stools soft until the surgery has healed. Did they do that? After the surgery has healed there should be no ill effects. I would contact the vet that performed the procedure and let them know. They may need to adjust the sutures, or provide you with some medications such as a stool softener that will allow the stool to pass more easily.

My cat just recently had surgery to fix his prolapsed rectum. He is now trying to poop and is still strugglingto get anything out. Is this normal at the beginning of recovery? And only little poop is coming, hardly any. Is all of this normal for now
He should start having an easier time pooping but could be difficult at first due to the pain and/or swelling. If you aren’t giving any stool softeners right now, I would contact your vet and ask for some to help with recovery. They may also want to recheck his incision. You can also add some canned pumpkin (~1 teaspoon) to his diet twice a day to help make the stool pass more easily. I hope this helps.

I can’t really tell from the photo but it looks like a possible rectal prolapse. I suggest you deworm this dog and use granulated sugar on the prolapsed tissue. That should shrink it so it goes back in. This happens from straining to defecate so feed soft foods that are easy to digest. You can use amoxicillin if you have it. Be advised sometimes surgery is needed to fix this. I would talk to your vet about ensuring he is on the proper diet, but also about whether or not he needs to be on a stool softener for a little while. The fear will have to improve with time once the dog realizes it doesn't hurt to have a BM. If you are afraid he is still in pain, I would talk to your vet about starting him on some meds to help this as well. I hope this helps!

Panda had surgery to remove his dew toe on 2 days ago he is eating and drinking well has been out to urinate twice but not pooped he is on cage rest so wonder if I should take to vet today or wait a another 2 days as he has to get bandage changed in

So sorry that Penny had to have surgery. Not defecating is a very common problem after this type of surgery. As you said, it is hard for them to squat because the leg hurts. She will figure it out. The best you can do is to use a towel as a sling to help her walk to steady her so she can poop. If she is taking a pain medication called Tramadol you want to talk to your vet about decreasing the dose or stopping it completely. It can cause a decrease in colonic motility. It is worrisome for us for them not to poop but really it's not a huge problem at this point. The suppository will not help so don't bother. You can try adding a tablespoon of pumpkin puree to her food. This will add fiber to her diet, and may help her pass feces. Please do not give her a human laxative or enema, as this is not safe to do. Human laxatives should only be given under strict veterinary supervision, and human enemas contain ingredients that can cause fatal electrolyte imbalances in dogs. If need, the vet can prescribe laxative and give an enema. Having her seen by a vet tomorrow is a good idea. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Anal sac removal surgery can have this kind of complication, that could be transient (lasts up to 2-3weeks time) or unfortunately permanent. Fecal incontinence is due to nerve inflammation. Perianal/anal reflex can be eventually stimulated by using a thermometer. I would wait a week time more before considering it permanent. This morning I took my 11 year old shih tzu cross to the vet as she has 2 days of constipation. Sedation given, Abdo xray was done and found she has impacted faeces and gas build up. Vet administered enema - removed build up and gave metacam for pain
Your dog probably feels like she needs to poop but there is nothing left in her colon if your veterinarian did a complete enema. At this point I would try offering her a small now easily digestible food like some plain boiled chicken and rice, and see if she eats. She may need additional pain meds for a few days to get through the discomfort being impacted. I would also recommend you put her on a prescription diet that is specifically made for dogs with G.I. issues because it will help her stay regular. You may also want to ask your vet about a medication called lactulose. This medication can be given daily and can help keeps two songs and make them easier to pass. Make sure Coco has plenty of water as well. If she becomes dehydrated it will make it more difficult for her to poop. If she is still straining to poop, starts vomiting, stops wanting to eat, or has diarrhea, then I would recommend taking her back to your vet for a recheck. Being a post-operative change there is probably not a direct treatment for this. However, you can consider increasing the fiber in the diet.
