My dog has diarrhea for 3 days, ate toys. Should I go to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 57 lbs

Apollo is on day three with diarrhea. He is eating fine, drinking his water, still wanting to play, pink gums, no pain when I push around his abdomen, but is just a bit less hyperactive. He has a history of swallowing toys whole, but the only symptom of a blockage is the diarrhea. How long should I wait before going to the vet? Thanks in advance.

Since this has been going on for three days and he has a history I would get him seen by your vet as soon as possible. If he has an obstruction, it could be with something small enough to allow some things to pass, but still enough to irritate his bowel. A bacterial or viral infection is also possible. If his energy level is not what it was, it could mean the problem is progressing and getting him seen sooner rather than later is a good idea.

Since this has been going on for a few days, his energy level is coming down, and he has a history of swallowing toys, I recommend getting him seen by your vet as soon as possible. If he does have an obstruction, it could be something smaller that isn't completely blocking his intestine.
