My male dog has yellow discharge from his penis. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 7 years and 7 months old | 48 lbs

My 6-year-old neutered male dog has had yellow fluid coming from his penis pretty much every day for the past 3 months. He typically licks it away when it builds up. He is in no discomfort — eating, peeing, acting normally. I did take him to a vet who wanted to put him on antibiotics, but she offered medicated wipes if I was uncomfortable with medication, so I took those instead. They haven’t helped. I’m not sure if this is anything to be concerned about or if I should take him back to the vet.

This much discharge is not normal. A little is, but not as much as you describe. Especially if this is a new problem I would be a bit worried. Did your vet actually check inside the prepuce (the sheath covering the penis) and/or flush it? There could be a piece of grass or something in there that is causing the discharge. You will need to allow your vet to do a very thorough exam of the prepuce and maybe do some testing to get this figured out. I'm glad he is not actively ill but you don't want to wait until it's too late. This article talks about differential diagnoses and what tests need to run to rule things in/out. If you have more questions you can always opt for a private consultation where we can chat back and forth. That way you can ask as many questions as you'd like. Best wishes.
