My 4-day-old kitten has an abscess. Can I treat it at home safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a 4 day old newborn kitten that has an abscess on her neck. I noticed something on her fur and made sure to gently drain the pus and I cleaned it with diluted Chlorhexidine. It's not too deep but was wondering if there is anything else I can do at home to help this baby heal.

I wouldn't recommend anything more at home, but I would encourage you to have your vet examine this young kitten. It is unusual for such a young kitten to develop an abscess and oral antibiotics might be necessary to help treat infection. The vet could also make sure this kitten is otherwise healthy with no indications of an underlying health condition that could have led to an abscess.
