How to tell if my dog's panting is normal or a health issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered

what are signs your dog has breathing problems? charlie sometimes breathes with his mouth opened, especially now that it’s getting warmer, or after playing for a bit, and i’ve noticed this happens quite often at night when we go to bed after our night walk (maybe the bed warms him too much?). he never heavily pants, and i’ve checked his breathing and it’s usually on the normal rates. (attaching the picture to ask if his tongue looks normal too)

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Charlie. His tongue is a normal pink color. He is likely panting a bit due to the heat or his exercise level. Difficulty breathing is indicated by abdominal effort when breathing, rapid or heavy breathing not associated with panting or a blue/grey color to the gums. These are all signs of an emergency. Dogs in these circumstances are acting very sick as well. I hope this information helps!
