Why did my vet give Convenia and another a steroid for dog fever?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 months and 3 days old | 9 lbs

My 11 month old Baileys 3rd eyelids started to show 1 1/2 weeks ago, took to vet who gave him a covenia injection for a 103 fever n send him home. Today with him still looking bad i took him for 2nd opinion to different vet, still had the 103 fever n he gave a corticosteroid shot. Whats the difference between the 2 to help fevers? May switch vets cause covenia is used for everything where i go. Thank you.

Convenia is an antibiotic and not a steroid, used to treat infections. If one vet gave Convenia, they were likely suspecting something such as a respiratory infection that can cause third-eyelids to show, discharge from the nose, fever, etc. If the other vet gave a steroid shot, then they were suspecting something auto-immune or immunity related causing the fever and not an infection. Since you've had two different treatments, it is likely best to have your vet give a full examination, bloodwork, etc to try and find if the cause is an infection or of another nature.
