My senior cat is vomiting white foam and food. What's the cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 12 years old | 8 lbs

I've had 12yr old female moggy for 3 yrs. Very good health and up until recently had only vomited maybe twice p.a. Recently she has been vomiting more regularly, mainly white frothy liquid, and sometimes her food. Diet is unchanged and she enjoys Royal Canin anti furr ball biscuits. She rarely goes out, is not a hunter, and sometimes eats the grass in the garden (more recently this spring). There's no grass products or chemical slug pellets, etc., in the garden. Any ideas of the cause?

Vomiting in cats is very complex and it is not always easy to figure out why they do it. Three most common diseases that older cats get are thyroid disease, kidney disease and diabetes. All of which can cause vomiting and all of which can be ruled out with simple blood testing. I suggest you refer to this article and then speak to your vet about starting some testing start with blood tests. ( https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/vomiting-in-cats )
