My dog has a toe tumor; vet suggests euthanasia. What are my options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 13 years and 5 months old | 65 lbs

My dogs pinky toe is infected. He lost the toenail and then an infection. The animal hospital we took him to said it was a tumor. They want 750.00 to remove that tumor but thinks Wilbur does not have the skin to cover it.. So they think we should put him to sleep.

I am so sorry that Wilbur has a tumor. Would amputating the leg be an option for him? That removes the tumor, you don't have to worry about having enough skin to cover the area, and dogs do great on three legs. Can you speak to another vet about a second opinion?
