My cat had a tooth extraction. Is it safe to feed her after bleeding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Turkish Angora | Female | spayed | 13 years and 2 months old | 9.5 lbs

Hi, my cat had a tooth extraction last week but her stitches got out of place and today veterinarian put few more. She told me to feed her during the day because my cat was not eating last 2 weeks, she lost 1 kg and she had to receive IV. She started to eat on her own when we got home but then she started to bleed from her mouth. I stopped the bleeding but now I'm afraid to feed her. Can you please advise me should I feed her regardless? Thank you!

If you have soft food to feed her, like canned or moist food that would be easier on her sore gums right now. You can moisten dry kibble with water or low-sodium chicken broth to make it softer and entice her to eat. You can even soak the food and mash it with a fork with some extra liquid so it's easy for her lap instead of trying to chew. It is very important that your cat eats because just a few days without eating can result in liver damage in cats.
