My cat's cheek abscess won't heal, still infected with pus?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 8.8 lbs

i have a 1 year old cat who had an abscess 1 month ago. the abscess popped by itself. i started cleaning it and applying antiseptic by the time i decided to go to the vet because the wound was so infected that i couldn't do it on my own. There were total of 4 vet trips. the vet drained, cleaned and put a bandage on cat abscess (left cheek). after each trip to the vet and after many oral antibiotic treatments (Marbocyl P/clavudale) and ointment treatments, wound hole is still infected (pus). help

Oh my. Poor kitty. It seems this area needs to be cultured to see what kind of antibiotic will rid this infection for sure, or at the very least another class of antibiotic (i.e. fluoroquinolone) should be tried here. I would also not cover this for the future, to give it a chance to breathe an heal well. The area should also be investigated while Mickey is sedated to ensure there is no foreign body material underneath the skin that could be a source of chronic infection. If there is foreign material there, then it needs to be removed first in order for it to heal well. I hope this helps and best wishes with your kitty Mickey moving forward! Take care. : )
