How to prevent budgies from breeding if one is male and one is female?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 18 days old

We've just realised one of our budgies, thought to be male, is female... Oops! We can't switch her since she's already bonded but is there any way we can make sure they don't breed if we house them together? We already bought a large cage before we found out. Will they defiantly breed if they're put together? The female is still pretty aggressive towards the other budgie but she never hurts him. (:

Thanks for reaching out about Quiz and including photos. They still might or not breed, individual variation. There are certain things to remove that might decrease the likelihood of egg laying, such as no nesting material or nest boxes, adding a little stress as re-arranging the perches occasionally. Seek a veterinary visit is additional advise needed. Good luck.
