Cat bit my parakeet. What to do for bird injuries before the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered

One of our parakeets was attacked by our cat :( They're in separate rooms but the cat slipped in while our daughter was showing the birds to her friends. There are two wounds that I see - one on his lower back and one by his leg. Neither wound bled very much. I put a Q-tip with hydrogen peroxide on both and then put Neosporin on them. It's Sunday, so there isn't an available vet until tomorrow morning. Wings seem fine but he is favoring the injured let (although still using it).

Thanks for reaching out about Ettienne. Cat bites are notorious for being dirty and causing infections. Systemic antibiotics are required as topicals will not penetrate into wounds. A veterinary visit must be scheduled for tomorrow, if an emergency veterinary clinic is not available this evening (preferred). Monitor appetite and activity. Good luck.
