What to do if my puppy won't eat, lost weight, and is lethargic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 12 days old | 6 lbs

My puppy hasn’t eaten in seven days. She has lost a lot of weight. She doesn’t want to do anything but sleep. What should I do?

Oh dear! If Piper has not eaten in seven days and is acting lethargic, this is definitely not normal - she needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible, as this sounds like a potentially life-threatening problem. I would recommend taking her to an emergency clinic tonight to be seen. The veterinarian there can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and see what kind of treatment is needed. If you're not sure where to take her, try calling your regular vet's office - their voicemail message should have contact information for your nearest ER or an on-call doctor for emergencies.
