Dwarf hamster prolapse: Is surgery with anesthesia the best option?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 0.1 lbs

My dwarf hamster has had 3 uterine prolapses this year. She is 1.5. Our vet recommended surgery- anesthesia to put a stitch to keep it in. I am concerned about the death rate with anesthesia and what the best option for her is.

Thanks for reaching out about Princess. Anesthesia should be safe based on whether she is healthy. Underlying heart concerns (liver, kidney, heart) are difficult in hamsters as blood collection requires anesthesia first. It surely sounds as if nothing is done, she will do poorly, so something must be done. Concerns are that putting sutures in isn't addressing the problem of why is she prolapsing in the first place. Good luck.
