My dog has a lump on his tail after a hot spot healed. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 50 lbs

My dog had a hot spot on the base of his tail a few months ago. The vet shaved it and gave him a steroid shot. The hotspot healed but the hair never fully grew back. He had since developed a lump where the hotspot was. It is firm, normal color, not painful. Any ideas on what it could be? Pictures attached.

Poor guy. This could be a large area of scar tissue or cellulitis. However, other possibility include a hematoma or abscess. I would recommend having the area palpated by your vet to gather more information about this area. At worst it may need to be tested, but if it isn't bothering Simba, benign neglect and monitoring it over the next couple of weeks isn't a bad idea. I hope Simba's weird swelling resolves on its own soon! Best wishes and take care.
