Is changing my dog's food right for grass eating & red eyes? Brands?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 9 months old | 20 lbs

My dog has been very persistent on trying to eat grass the last couple of days.I tried giving him some wet food with his dry food to try to relieve whatever it is but he still wants grass. His eyes have also been a bit red for about 2 month, I dont know if it's old age. I was going to change his food from Chicken Beneful to Salmon Blue Buffalo on June 10 is there anything else I could do? Is changing his food the right choice and if so what food brands would you recommend?

Frankly, I'm not a fan of Blue Buffalo since they have been cited for lying about the ingredients in their foods more than once. My personal favorite brands of dog food are Science Diet and Royal Canin. Both are excellent quality, made in their own facilities so there's less chance of contamination with other foods and all are extensively tested for effectiveness and palatability. If he hasn't been to the vet in a while, I recommend getting him checked to make sure there isn't some underlying medical condition causing his upset stomach.
