My dog ate a used hand warmer. Should I be worried about him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 10 months old | 48 lbs

I have a 47 lb, 10 month old male lab mix. I think he just ate a hand warmer that has already been used and is no longer hot. It says the ingredients are cellulose, iron, water, activated carbon, vermiculite (water reservoir) and salt. He is not showing any signs of being sick yet. He only ate one.. will he be ok?

Luckily, once a handwarmer is used up, the iron is oxidized and inactivated. This eliminates the risk of iron toxicity. Depending on the size of the warmer, Rummy may be at risk of obstruction. Ideally, he should be seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. Either can induce vomiting via injection to get the handwarmer out. This is most successful when done within 2 hours of ingestion. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.
