How long does Gabapentin last? Can I redose my cat for travel?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 years and 8 months old | 11 lbs

My cats were both prescribed Gabapentin for vet visits and it was approved to be given for the 8hr drive we're gonna take while moving. I gave a tablet each as it said I can do on the label at about 7pm. We leave at 4:45am and one of my cats seems a tad more clumsy and I'm not sure how long it stays in their system. Can I still give the dose this morning before the trip like it says on the bottle?? It's 100mg capsules and my cat weighs 11-12lbs.

Hello, thank you for your question about Mika. Gabapentin can last for up to 12 hours depending on the patient and the dose. If Mika is still walking around and responsive you can still give her the additional dose in the morning. This will take effect as the first dose starts to wear off and shouldn't lead to significant sedation/unsteadiness. Hope this helps!
