My dog is coughing, dry heaving, and lethargic. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 43 lbs

My one year old male dog has been dry heaving or coughing and seems to be struggling to keep his eyes open. He other wise is acting fine, but I’m worried. Should I take him in?

Poor guy. Coughing in pets should always be addressed by your vet, especially if it seems to be interferring with Opie's quality of life. He seems to be lethargic if he can't keep his eyes open. I wonder if the coughing is keeping him up at night and so he can't get enough rest? It is best to get this treated soon. A short course of antibiotics will likely be prescribed. I hope that Opie feels better soon! Best wishes and take care. : )
