My vet gave my cat dog ear drops. Is Mometamax safe for cats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Manx | Female | unspayed | 10 years and 8 months old | 11 lbs

My cat had a bacterial ear infection and I took her to the vet today, he gave me Mometavet but after I got home I see this is only for dogs and they're closed. Do you think this was by mistake?

Mometamax can be used in cats "off label". Meaning the label does not state that it can be used in cats only because the company did not do clinical trials on it in that species (usually because it is very costly). I do no think this was a mistake and I would go ahead and use it as prescribed.

This can be used in cats, so yes it's safe. Use of Mometamax has been associated with partial hearing loss in a small number of geriatric dogs. It can be temporary in some dogs. I did not see that side effect in cats.
