My overweight dog has symmetrical groin lumps. Is it a hernia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 111 lbs

I know my dog is overweight he is a great pyrenees mix and is 7 years old. I just got him groomed and i noticed an area was around his groin on both sides and wondering if this is normal in a dog that is overweight or if it looks like inguinal hernias. It is not red like these pictures anymore but the size is the same. The redness was irritation from being groomed. I am about to leave town and am worrying. He has an appointment I am just scared of what it is I have little money.

Its difficult to tell without being able to directly palpate (feel/touch/examine) the area, but I suspect its probably just how fat has deposited there. Its common to have a fat "pooch" in that area, usually it will be about the same size on both sides of the abdomen. If he's not painful, he's acting normally, and it looks the same on both sides, you don't need to be concerned about this. Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
