My 6-month puppy has green eye discharge and redness. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 months and 21 days old | 21 lbs

Puppy has greenish and sometimes yellowish or milky white discharge from right eye in the corner. It seems to come and go within a day then back again. Slightly deeper red in the corner of her eye but that's the only place. I thought perhaps a piece of debris but now it has been a week. She isn't scratching at it. She's 6 months old.

Hello. There could be a small scratch on the cornea that is just not healing, or there is a piece of debris underneath the third eyelid. This is a common place for a piece of weed or a seed to become trapped, & the only safe way to check this is to apply a drop of anesthetic to the eye & pull the third eyelid up with a pair of forceps. Even if nothing is found, this might be a case of folliculitis of the third eyelid. It will take your vet only a few minutes to check all this out, does not require any sedation or general anesthesia, & you can have your answer immediately. Regardless of what is found, an ophthalmic medication will probably be dispensed. Please make an appointment to see your vet at your earliest convenience.
