My dog's tick bite bump has pus and a hole. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 2 years and 10 months old | 40 lbs

Hello iam needing an advice for my dog. She got a tick a week ago which I removed when it was full, I made sure the whole body is removed. Today I noticed that the bump from the bite still was there and I squeezed the puss out partially. There's a big hole, a bump and puss inside, should I consider bringing her to the local veterinary or would self cleaning be enough? Thank you.

Hello, thank you for using Pet Coach! I don’t think this is anything to worry about. You can just treat it at home. Keep it clean and apply a topical antibiotic ointment twice a day. If after a week it doesn’t look like it’s healing then you should take her to the vet for an exam.
