My dog has high microalbuminuria. Is it early kidney disease?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 8 years and 6 months old | 10.5 lbs

I received Cookie's urinalysis results today. Everything is normal except microalbuminuria. The normal ref range is <2.5, hers is 2.6. Her last blood test was in Feb and everything including T4 was normal. Is 2.6 too high? Should I worry? Is microalbuminuria an indication of early kidneys disease? I read mixed opinions about it. Please advise what I should do.

While an increase in microalbuminuria can be an indication the kidneys are becoming leaky and less effective, such a mild increase would not be overly concerning if all else is well. I would recommend rechecking in 6-8weeks to track any further changes and a blood test if increasing at that stage
