Why is my fixed male cat crying and pooping outside his litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 4 years and 10 months old | 13 lbs

Our cat cries and moans non stop day and night. He's male and fixed. We cannot figure out what's wing with him. This has been going on longer than 6 months. He's also starting to poop outside of his literbox but still uses it to urinate. He's never done that before. We've tried ignoring him when he cries and moans but it doesn't stop. Help!

It is always best to have your vet examine your pet if there is a drastic change in behavior. A medical condition should be ruled out before just assuming it is behavioral in origin. If there is no underlying medial problem found then you can assume this is a behavioral issue, in which case, I suggest you start using some Feliway diffusers in your house to help calm him and do some environmental enrichment.
