My senior dog has a rapidly growing gum growth. Is it serious?

My senior dog has a growth on her gum line. It only started less than a week ago and is growing rapidly. She is a mix bread 12 years old. No medical problems other than food allergies

In order to get a better idea of what that is, a cytology or biopsy of the area would need to be obtained. Statistically, the most likely types of lesions in the mouth in older dogs are usually squamous cell carcinomas, melanomas, and less frequently fibrosarcoma. Unfortunately, none of these are considered benign but some definitely carry a better prognosis than the others particularly if you elect surgical removal of the affected tissue. I would recommend a veterinary visit and to schedule a time to remove and/or biopsy the affected tissue. Hope this makes sense. If the picture is leading me in the wrong direction, than a more benign type of growth is possible called an epulis. However, it does not appear like that to me.
