Rat has a mammary tumor and red eyes. How can I help him at home?

Updated On December 4th, 2025

My vet confirmed that my rat has a mammary tumor but we can’t afford to have it removed, is there any home remedies you would suggest trying in order to maybe stop it from getting bigger and possibly shrink it? He also always has a red lining around his eyes and his brother doesn’t. What is this and is there anything I can do to help this?

Thanks for reaching out about your pet rat and including photos. Unfortunately, the only cure is surgical removal and spay. The red tears are probably a mycoplasma respiratory infection with porphyrin discharge, an indication of stress. Oral antibiotics might lessen this discharge but is not a cure. Quality of life care is best for now. Good luck.
