What can cause mucus in rat stool? We just aquired a new rat and she seems to have some loose not really diarrhea more just a soft stool with a few having bits of mucus attached. She seems to be eating fine and is quite energetic.

Thanks for reaching out about Mia. Any cause of intestinal upset can lead to increased mucous. This could be infections, inflammation, parasites, obstructions, etc. Has the type of food changed? This could lead to intestinal inflammation, and is hopefully short lived. If decreased appetite or lethargic, a veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.
