My cat's skin problem came back after antifungal cream. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 14 lbs

I’m wanting to know what this might be. I have taken her to her vet and they told me they didn’t know. Gave me an anti fungal cream. Applied it and it went away, only for it to come right back. I’ve tried to google what it could be since my vet couldn’t really tell me, but no such luck.

If it went away with the antifungal cream and returned when you stopped the cream, it's probably a fungal infection of some sort. It can take a very long time to fully clear those up, so she may need a much longer course of treatment or even oral medication.

I am sorry we couldn't get to your question sooner. This is a question best suited for your vet. Most creams that I prescribe shouldn't cause a red reaction to the skin - this could be caused by either that particular medication or just the infection it is being used to treat. I would call the vet and get their recommendation on whether you should stop the cream or continue its use, since they are most familiar with the case.
