My dog is too skinny for neutering. Should I get a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 45 lbs

I have had my rescue dog for 3 years now. Been wanting to get him neutered but vet won't due to him not reaching a healthy weight. He would gain it, but for some reason it'll disappear and he'll look like he was when we first got him (skin and bones). Brought concern up with his vet but they dont know what it could be. Please help. 2 pics when we got him at 6 months and when he's at desired weight. Cant get good pic of him now. He's a pit mix. Vet thinks shepard.

I think his weight is fine in these photos. I would definitely not classify him as "skin and bones". I suggest you get a second opinion from another vet. I would have no problem neutering this dog. Too many people are used to seeing overweight animals so when an animal is normal weight they think it's too skinny. I honestly don't see a problem.
