My senior dog has eye warts. Is anesthesia safe for their removal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 70 lbs

My 13 1/2 year old black lab has 2 large warts on his eye that are causing him to tear excessively. His alk phos is 1800 and alt is 500. He has had a liver ultrasound and it was fine. Our vet is confident in removing these warts under general anesthesia, but I am nervous. He said that the warts are large enough that laser or cryo would probably need general anesthesia too. We are in a small town and have no options for specialized care. I am desperate for some advice.

I understand your concern! I think surgery is ususally your best option at having the eye growths removed if they are a problem. I would recommend a IV catheter to make sure Mitch is getting proper supportive care during surgery. Typically elevated liver values like the ALP could be due to older age. I would recommend doing what you are comfortable with and talking through all your concerns with the vet doing the surgery. I hope that helps
