My dog is losing weight on a prescription low-fat diet. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 5 years and 6 months old | 8 lbs

So when we got dove she was almost 8 pounds. They found out that her liver and body can’t handle fat so they put her on a prescription food diet that is low fat. Ever since then she has been loosing weight left and right. Every vet visit she has lost weight. Last month she weighed 5 pounds then this month she weighed 4 pounds. Should I be worried?

Even on a low-fat diet, excessive weight loss is not expected or normal. I recommend to have Dove checked for other potential problems such as kidney disease, cancer or progression of her liver condition. If no medical causes found, the doctor may need to change her diet or provide some sort of high calorie supplement to control her weight loss. You will first need to rule out other medical conditions. Best of luck.
