Why did my dog get sick after flea meds & shampoo? Are they safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 4 months old | 6 lbs

I applied advantage II on my 9 yo 6lb Yorkie poo mix like I have for the past 6 months on the 20th of each month. Within a week she is covered in fleas so I gave her a bath in Hartz flea and tick shampoo around 9 am, at about 230 pm she became stiff and shaking, lifting her left paw. When I sat her on the ground she wobbled and couldn't really walk in a normal way? She then threw up. I bathed her in gentle puppy soap. Were those not safe to use together?

It is possible that Crickett was showing a reaction to using these products. It is also possible that she was having something like a seizure that was unrelated. I recommend to play it safe and have a Crickett examined by her veterinarian and have her blood work checked to make sure everything is normal. It also sounds like your flea prevention is not working. Please do become immune to products. Speak with your veterinarian about what type of flea product is best to use for Crickett. The oral flea products are best for dogs but some dogs who have seizures cannot tolerate them. I hope this helps.
