My dog is overweight. How much food should I feed her to lose weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 1 month old | 45 lbs

I have a 3 year old mut, who I assume should be about 30-35 pounds due to her size, (about the size of a beagle) and she is a little bit overweight. Currently, she gets 1cup of Iams healthy adult mini chunks two times a day(am and pm). I'm wondering if it's maybe time I give her a 1/2 cup instead of a full to help her shed those pounds? We go on daily walks, about 2.5 miles and I'm having trouble getting her to lose weight. She has been checked recently and is a healthy little gal. Any advice?

I think cutting the food in half may be a bit drastic at first. You don't want the weight loss to happen too quickly. I suggest you start by cutting the food by 25%. So, give her 3/4 cup twice a day and then weigh her after 4-6 weeks to see if you are making any progress. Keep in mind that any treats will increase her caloric intake so be careful and don't give her too much (if any). This is where I would start. Hope this helps. Best wishes!
