My dog has an anal gland abscess after antibiotics. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 3 years and 1 month old | 6 lbs

Zoe was just getting over an abscess on one side of her little butt. The day after the antibiotics were finished she developed another abscess on the other side of her butt. The vet can’t get us in until Monday but I’m worried she’s hardly using the wee wee pads and she’s shaking a lot and not herself. I gave her the pain med they gave with the antibiotics but I’m worried. What should I do ? She won’t let me put warm packs on her and she popped the blister.

I recommend to have Zoe examined earlier. The shaking and acting unusual likely means she is very uncomfortable but it could also indicate a spreading of the infection. If these are her anal glands abscessing, she will need to be set up on a regular interval for anal gland expression. There are also supplements available that can help to control the condition. I hope little Zoe starts feeling better quickly.
