Why won't my new kitten eat after adoption and neuter surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 months and 27 days old | 7 lbs

We adopted a cat this weekend. 7-8 mos old. Neutered on Saturday, brought home Sunday. He seems fine in all respects but he hasn’t eaten much and doesn’t seem interested in the food we’ve offered. We’ve tried Wellness wet and fancy feast wet and Blue wilderness dry foe kittens.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. Congrats on your new kitten! Moving into a new home is stressful, and it sometimes can cause a decrease in appetite. In all honestly, I never recommend Blue Buffalo, it's frankly a terrible food, and I'm not surprised he's turning his nose up at it. Try a brand like Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams to see if he likes that better. If he doesn't eat that food, then a heath check with a vet is recommended right away. I hope this helps!
