My cat ate slugs and is now hiding, clumsy, and afraid. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 11 months old | 6 lbs

Indoor cat ate 2 slugs with no contact with slug repellent. Had what looked to be headache. Gave CAT pain reliever leftover from shots. Seemed to get better but now hiding and getting shaggy (coat is still shiny and have noticed grooming just not as much). Suddenly afraid of everything. And seems clumsy. Will still come when called and reacts with purr when touched as she always has. Worried. Also have been treated for bedbugs but was kept carefully out of the way. Cannot afford vet. Pls help.

Unfortunately I'm not sure there's much you'll be able to do at home without seeing a vet. There are no diseases that come to mind that would be passed from a slug to a cat, and if Fuzzy did not have access to slug bait I would not be concerned about the ingestion. It does sound like she's not feeling well, but the 'headache' symptoms and clumsiness could be a sign of a myriad of health problems and are not specific. A fever or neurologic disease are two possibilities. If she continues to act abnormally I'd recommend finding a way to see a vet - you could look into Care Credit or ask about other payment plans.
