Hello. Unfortunately, this does sound like a problem that should be sorted out by your veterinarian. This could be an infection like tracheobronchitis, or even more serious like pneumonia. I would have Crystal seen as soon as convenient. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Yes, choking can be serious. There may be something stuck in her throat or an abnormality within the esophagus or trachea that needs to be addressed quickly. I recommend to have Crystal examined today. It's always best to play it safe.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If her gums/tongue are pink and not blue or purple she's probably not choking. They can forcefully cough like something is stuck for many reasons- kennel cough, heart disease, bronchitis, parasites are just a few. If she's blue or purple I would see a vet ASAP. If not, i would see a vet soon for an exam and possible radiographs to determine the cause and severity of the cough. Please don't give any over the counter medications until you talk to your vet. Good luck and kisses to Notti!

Poor Naja! Coughing can be a sign of several things like a upper respiratory infection (aka kennel cough), heart disease, pneumonia, tracheal irritation or tracheal collapse, a fungal infection and much more. Hopefully since you say it sounds like she is choking that she just has an upper respiratory infection. Most upper respiratory infections will cause dogs to hack (sounds like choking) and then sometime even spit up some white foam. Unfortunately, since I cannot see her and do an exam I cannot say this for sure. I would definitely have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to listen to her heart and lungs and do blood work or X-rays if needed. Your vet will also be able to prescribe her some antibiotics and cough suppressant if needed. If an upper respiratory infection goes left untreated, it has the potential to turn into a pneumonia which can make them much sicker. I hope this helps!
