My cat came home injured and won't go outside. Is a vet visit needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 4 lbs

My indoor/outdoor cat didn’t come home Wednesday night , he finally came back home Thursday night . He hasn’t wanted to go back outside since and he’s been very grumpy and not wanting to be touched. Upon examining him , I found this injury (in photos below) this is the best photo I could get . He doesn’t like for me to hold out his arm to be able to get a good photo. He’s eating and walking fine but still has no interest of going outside. Does he need to go to the vet ?

That looks to be a cat bite abscess (an infection from another cat biting him). He will definitely need antibiotics so yes, you need to get him to a vet. ( https://www.petcoach.co/article/cat-bite-infections-wounds-and-abscesses/ ) As a side note, if he is not neutered please get that done. Intact male cats are more prone to fighting; not to mention we don't need him running the neighborhood making kittens.
