My dog is limping, growling, and has paw injuries. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 10 months and 26 days old | 17 lbs

My 10 mo Whoodle was playing with another dog, running a lot on a tennis court. When we got home he was laying down & I went to pet him & he growled at me. After some time in his crate he seemed normal again but I noticed him limping so on further inspection it appears he ended up breaking a lot of his nails and the pad on one of his paws looks like it’s shedding. He won’t let me near him now without biting/growling. I feel horrible & don’t know what to do

Poor Maverick. Broken nails and paw pad injuries are painful. Often times dogs will need to be sedated so that the nails and pads can be repaired. They also need pain medication and often antibiotics. He also needs to be wearing an elizabethan collar at all times to prevent licking since this can make the injuries worse. I recommend to have him seen by the veterinarian. These injuries typically take 10-14 days to heal during that time he cannot walk on rough surfaces and should have significantly restricted activity. I hope he starts feeling better quickly.
